Air California, (later Air Cal,1981) debuted in 1967 as an intrastate regional airline (and in later years served a number of destinations in neighboring states). Air California was founded by two Orange County businessmen as an alternative to other airlines and what was left of the state's passenger railroad system. The airline's initial route was between Orange County Airport and San Francisco International Airport, (a previously unserved route).
