The original "Arte Felguérez" Studio sculptures were designed in 1964 by Manuel Felguérez, one of the most accomplished Mexican artist of the 20th century. Felguérez was born in 1928 in Valparaíso, Mexico, raised in Mexico City and went on to study under French-Russian Cubist artist Ossip Zadkine at the Grande Chaumière Academy in Paris. Felguérez is part of the "Generación de la Ruptura" which broke away from the muralist movement of Diego Rivera and other artists in the mid 20th century. Part of his many accomplishments includes being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship & helping establish the Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez. The museum opened in 1998 and was the first museum of its kind in Mexico and Latin America. It displays works by Felguérez and owns and exhibits a permanent collection of works by artists from around the globe.
